Dry Mouth

Dry Mouth

Xerostomia commonly known as “dry mouth” is prevalent today for a variety of reasons, frequently associated with mediation we take. These medications range from OTC (over the counter) to prescription. Xerostomia increases the risk of tooth decay and affects overall health. It is so common because its causes are so numerous, including anxiety.  Anxiety speeds up some of the body’s systems, but slows down the salivary flow, causing dry mouth. (one example of non medication induced “dry mouth”)

There are several solutions available to help with dry mouth. You may try frequent sips of water throughout the day, use chewing gum with Xylitol sweetener and mouth moisturizing products such as Biotene. Consult your dentist or dental hygienist for other ways to combat dry mouth and its effects on your dental health.
